This series contains correspondence, notes, account books, letters of introduction and other material relating to his professional life as curator, vice-director, director and director emeritus.

This series consists of personal letters, cards and postcards from his mother and various friends while he was in China and after his move to Kansas City. Among the correspondents are his mother, May R. Sickman, Sir Harold Acton, Georgia O'Keeffe, Langdon Warner, Otto Burchard, Margot and Paul Mallon, Lincoln Kirstein, Vincent Price, Carl Van Vechten and Edith and Osbert Sitwell.

This series contains passports, business cards, a personalized Christmas card, a postcard collection, invitations, calling cards, address books, check stubs, bank statements and other papers related to his personal finances, notes, book plates, memorabilia and mementos. Individual items such as family correspondence from 1848-1959 are also contained in this series. There are some papers and items such as honorary degrees that relate to his professional life as well.
