Administrative/Biographical Sketch
Formerly known as, Building and Operations, from 1962-1974, this department oversees general performance of the museum (remodeling, and maintenance), and planning, and carrying out its exhibitions and activities, such as dinners, receptions, and various programs. During this period, the department included sales, security, mailing, janitorial, and reception.
From 1966-1968, Clarence W. Simpson led the department as the superintendent, and Bobby Hornaday was the superintendent in charge of galleries, in 1966. In 1967, Sherwood Songer was hired as the assistant superintendent, and was promoted to superintendent in 1969. Mrs. Zale Glauberman, Jack Bennett, and Jerry Thomas became the new assistant superintendents. It was also in this year that Building and Operations became responsible for the museum bookstore.
In 1973, Sherwood Songer became the administrator of Business and Operations, which grew to include a carpenter, several doormen, a check girl, and a Saturday and Sunday operator. In 1975, Building and Operations became Business and Operations, and expanded management to include accounting, payroll, and purchasing.
In 1981-1982, a business office department was established. The Business Manager was Roger Van Wagoner. In 1985-1986, Business and Operations changed its name, again, to Administrative Services and Operations Division. Robert (Bob) Layton became the new business manager and held the position through 1991. The division included subsets such as the Business Office, Accounting, Bookstore, Personnel, Computer Services, Rozzelle Court Restaurant, Buildings and Operations, and Security.
In 1991-1992, the division was renamed to Finance and Operations Division, where William Markey took over as acting director, and then followed by Thomas Mathews, in 1992-1993.
