This collection, dated 1926-1999, contains material related to Scott Erbes’s years as the Assistant Curator of Decorative Arts at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and his research as co-author of the museum history, High Ideals and Aspirations. Included are letters, memoranda, and newspaper clippings.

Biographical / Historical Notes
Scott Erbes attended Michigan State University, where, in 1988, he earned his bachelor’s degree in History and Historic Preservation. Following graduation, he enrolled in the Winterthur Program in Early American Culture at the University of Delaware, where he received his master’s degree in 1990. Erbes began working in the Department of Decorative Arts at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art later that same year. He remained there until 1999, when he left to become the Curator of Decorative Arts at the Speed Museum in Louisville, Kentucky.

Abstract
This collection is comprised of correspondence, memoranda, and newspaper clippings from Erbes’s tenure as the Assistant Curator of Decorative Arts at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and as co-author of the Museum history, High Ideals and Aspirations.
Organization
The collection has been organized into two series: Correspondence (Series I) and High Ideals and Aspirations (Series II). Series I is arranged chronologically and Series II is arranged alphabetically by topically.
