Biographical / Historical Note

In the 1950s, the Westport Garden Club was closely associated with the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, where their four "Flower Festivals" took place. Proceeds from the festivals were used to establish a fund for a Junior Gallery for children within the Museum’s Creative Arts Center. With additional contributions from the Junior League of Kansas City, the Junior Gallery and Creative Arts Center was opened on January 30, 1960. The Gallery was created as an area especially scaled to the size and needs of the growing child. It was equipped with exhibition space, creative studios, classrooms, display cases, and a reception center designed to meet the children’s needs.
