Scope and Contents Note

These Senior Curator Records, 1949-1984, consist of correspondence, exhibition catalogs, invitations, lecture notes, memoranda, newspaper clippings, notes, pamphlets, photo negatives, photo prints, applications, reviews, schedules, research material and applications. The records document the activities of Ross Taggart as Senior Curator in the museum, as well as Mr. Taggart's various professional interests. Collection strengths include research material on the Frank P. Burnap Collection of English Pottery (1954-1969), art dealer correspondence (1949-1983) and information concerning the organization of special exhibitions at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (1954-1978).

Biographical / Historical Note

Ross E. Taggart began his association with the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in 1947 as Registrar. He served as Senior Curator from 1953-1983. Mr. Taggart is the only person in the museum's history to have held this position. The Senior Curator oversaw the museum's collections of American and European paintings and drawings, Decorative Arts, Classical and Egyptian Art. Activities of this office included cataloging of collections, research and development of acquisitions, organization of exhibitions and the production of related catalogs, grant preparation, lecture presentation and tour direction for the Society of Fellows, a museum support group.
