Scope and Contents Note
These records consist of correspondence and other miscellaneous materials collected and maintained while Laurence Sickman held the title of Director Emeritus at the Museum. They document his activities as a lecturer, teacher, and consultant after his official retirement from the Museum, especially in relation to Chinese artworks.

Biographical / Historical Note
Laurence Sickman retired as Director of the Museum in 1977. After this, he was named Director Emeritus and made an advisor to the Trustees. He continued in this position until his death in 1988.

The collection is organized into two series: Correspondence (Series I) and Miscellaneous (Series II). Series I is arranged alphabetically and Series II is arranged topically.
Immediate Source of Acquisition Note
Transfer; Accession number associated with this collection is 1992-02. In addition, secretary copies of Sickman’s correspondence as director emeritus that were transferred as part of his Director Records (RG 01/02) and as part of the records of Director Marc Wilson (RG 01/04) have been added to this record group.
