Scope and Contents Note

The Life and the Arts in the Baroque Palaces of Rome: Ambiente Barocco Exhibition records, dated 1997 to 1999, are comprised of materials of the arrangement and execution of the exhibition which took place at the Nelson-Atkins in 1999. Documentation includes paperwork and correspondence pertaining to, loan agreements, object lists, financial statements, travel arrangements, transportation of objects, object conservation, speaking engagements budget, and attendance.

Biographical / Historical Note

Life and the Arts in the Baroque Palaces of Rome: Ambiente Barocco which took place between July 25, 1999 to October 3, 1999, consisted of 100 objects from the Roman Baroque decorative arts. These included furniture, metal work, musical instruments, musical instruments, textiles, and works on paper from the years 1600-1730 and is described as being the first such exhibition for American viewers. Highlights include a rare tapestry from the Museo di Palazzo Venezia, an ebony prie dieu from the private collection of the Colonna family as well as a Barberini harp. Recurring themes were religious imagery, family heraldry, political and moral allegories, as well as scenes from epic poetry and theatre. The exhibit was organized by The Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative arts and curated by Stefanie Walker, assistant professor at Bard Graduate Center Studies in Decorative Arts. Arrangements were made with various national and international museums including, The Chicago Art Institute, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Louvre, Museo Nazionale degli Strumenti Musicali, and Museum der bildenden Kunste Leipzig.
