Biographical / Historical Note

The Andrew Wyeth: Autobiography exhibit (September 29 - November 26, 1995) consisted of 145 watercolor, tempera and dry brush paintings by the Maine-based artist, Andrew Wyeth. The exhibition, which also travelled to Japan, received a high amount of media coverage, with publicity in Time magazine and Newsweek. Facilitated by Thomas Hoving (of Hoving Associates Inc.), the exhibit was curated by Margaret Conrads, the Samuel Sosland Curator of American Art, with additional assistance from Crosby R. Kemper -- a friend and major supporter of Andrew Wyeth. Despite Wyeth being considered a controversial artist, the exhibit was extremely well-received and drew over 82,000 visitors during its run at the Nelson-Atkins.
