Scope and Contents

The book The Art and Architecture of China was part of the Pelican History of Art series published by Penguin Books. Laurence Sickman co-authored the book with Alexander Soper, an art history professor at New York University. Sickman wrote the section pertaining to art and Soper the section about architecture. The first edition of the book was published in 1956, the second in 1960, the third in 1968, and the paperback edition in 1971. This sub-series is composed of letters between Sickman and the publishers discussing revisions to the books, as well as the use of pictures and illustrations. The sub-series also contains reviews of the various editions of the book.
